In December 2013, the city of Sarasota was noted as a top ten small city in America. Movoto ranked small cities based off criteria such as nightlife, music, and youthful communities. The study reported while Sarasota may be lacking in young adults 20 to 34, it has plenty of nightlife and great eateries.

2. Playful City USA – North Port
North Port was named a Playful City USA for the fourth consecutive year. The award recognizes communities making a commitment to play and physical activity. North Port is home to 26 parks, with recreational facilities spreading over about 400 acres of land.

3. Great Waterfronts to Visit Across North America – Sarasota County 
USA Today recognized Sarasota County’s waterfront for its miles of white-sand beaches lining its barrier islands. Bayfront Park and the marina were also mentioned as a popular place for biking, walking, kayaking and canoeing.

4. Best Small Cities For Art Lovers – City of Sarasota
Sarasota was named a top small city for art lovers by TravelNerd. The city was recognized for its art walks, collections, museums and events.

Venice, Florida, got some summer love by MSN Living. Caspersen Beach was recognized as a beach to visit before summer ends. The town was noted as an idyllic, laid-back, bike-friendly seaside town. It was also noted for the numerous shark’s teeth to be found at Caspersen.

9. Runner Friendly Community
Road Runners Club of America recognized Sarasota County as a runner friendly community in 2013. It was one of only four communities recognized by the club in 2013. Sarasota has hundreds of miles of travels and pavement for runners to traverse.

Recognized by CNN, the Sarasota Chalk Festival is one of the best in the world. The article noted the chalk festival’s “Going Vertical” features, as well as its 3-D chalk artists.

The North Port, Bradenton, and Sarasota area topped ValuePenguin’s list as the best city for doctors. Those practicing in the area make average about $228,190 annually.

Both Sarasota and Venice made the list for top cities to retire in. Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch noted the area’s cultural facilities, parks, public tennis courts and beaches.
